Snow Ballin'

A marker sketch I did while remembering the fun I had playing in the year's first snow as a kid while growing up in the Northwest. I've seen the snow maybe three times in the last 20 years, and that's more than enough or me now...

After Uglow

A small copy/study of a favorite Euan Uglow piece. Turned out really nothing like his style (other than the typically androgynous look of his models), but it was a good excuse to pick up a brush...

Spoken Word Disconnect

This piece resides on a world famous low brow artist's bathroom wall. I can only hope it's over the toilet.

I find that often a close up works much better than the big picture. I like seeing brush strokes and the order in which colors are applied, and this gives a pretty good indication.

Poetry break...

This is a riff on El Lissitzky's PROUN work from the 20s. It's more of a visual pun, since "proun" doesn't really rhyme with "bow", "now", or "cow", and there's nothing remotely PROUN about the piece, but I have since decided that it only adds to the esoteric sophistication and ironic depth of the work. Seriously.

More of a study on this one, just to get the feel of the burlap.

Miss Appropriation

Took the family to Malibu (around Sycamore Canyon, I believe) last winter and found a bunch of burlap sacks on the beach. They seemed to be brand new, not even damp or stained. I have no idea what they were doing there, but I grabbed them and brought them home to paint on. I mounted them to Sintra and Masonite panels with PVA, primed them with acrylic "gesso" and went at it. Nice and rough, as you may imagine, but I find the results somewhat charming. The image was "influenced" by an old swimsuit pattern package illo...
